Cancer can affect any organ in the human body regardless of the vitality of the organ and the complications in connection with removing the tumor.
Similarly the tumor may effect the elements of the throat spreading and covering the entire vocal system.
Throat cancer usually develops in the mucous membrane of the throat, which can be caused by various harmful factors, the biggest of which is the long-term harmful effects of tobacco smoke. In case the tumor is located in the thickness of the mucous membrane or spreads in the thickness of the vocal cords, but does not affect the cartilage elements of the throat, it is possible to remove the tumor while preserving the vocal system. In this case, after the procedure, the patient recovers faster and postoperative discomforts and difficulties are minimal.
However, when the tumor spreads from the mucous membrane to the cartilage elements, it is necessary to remove the entire vocal system and sometimes even cervical lymph nodes (as there may be metastases) to prevent the recurrence of the tumor. After this surgery, the healing of the function disorders such as the loss of the voice and speech, caused by the removal of the throat is particularly difficult.
At ''Nairi'' Medical Center during the procedure after the throat is removed, a special voice prosthesis is placed, with the help of which it is possible to reproduce the voice and speech. A similar method is used in modern foreign clinics. The further process of recovery is organized by the combined work of the oncologist and speech therapist.
