Laser vision correction

15 July 2024 | News | Ophthalmology | Yelena K. Matevosyan

Who is Laser Vision Correction Suitable For?

Laser correction can restore vision in the following conditions:

- Myopia (from -0.5 to -12.0 diopters)

- Hyperopia (from +0.5 to +6.0 diopters)

- Astigmatism (up to -6.0 diopters)

When a patient with such a problem consults a specialist, they are examined to confirm the diagnosis, ensure there are no contraindications for the surgery, and select the most suitable treatment method for them.

Today, the most effective and popular methods of laser correction include Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), LASIK, Femto LASIK, and others. These and other modern types of laser vision correction are successfully used at the "Nairi" Medical Center. They also handle complex cases, and the results usually exceed all expectations. Each patient receives an individualized approach.

Who is Laser Vision Correction Contraindicated For?

One of the main contraindications for laser vision correction, as noted by Elena Matevosyan, is keratoconus. This is a degenerative, non-inflammatory disease in which the cornea thins due to structural changes.

The patient's age is not considered a contraindication; it can be performed from the age of 18, but in exceptional cases, it is usually done between the ages of 20-45, up to 50-55 years. However, as the specialist noted, sometimes such correction is needed for elderly patients after cataract surgery.

Pregnancy and Vision Correction

Despite the abundance of available information, there are quite a few myths about laser vision correction. Interestingly, many myths relate to pregnancy and childbirth. It is believed that vision correction should not be done before pregnancy. There is also an opinion that after correction, a cesarean section is chosen as the method of delivery.

What is the Reality?

As the specialist noted, correction cannot be done during pregnancy and immediately after childbirth, as the body's regenerative abilities are reduced during this period. Therefore, it is advisable to undergo laser surgery either before the planned pregnancy (but plan the timing so that the body has time to recover) or a year after childbirth.

Regarding the myth that natural childbirth is not possible after laser vision correction, this is not true. The fact is that laser correction is performed on the cornea of the eye, while retinal pathologies are considered an indication for a cesarean section. Some retinal pathologies can also be corrected with modern methods, after which natural childbirth is possible.

In some cases, a very thin cornea may also be a contraindication for natural childbirth. However, according to the specialist, previous laser correction itself is not an indication for a cesarean section.
