Another Unique Surgery at Nairi Medical Center

19 February 2025 | News | Andranik I. Adamyan | Tigran A. Adamyan

Under the leadership of the head of the General and Laparoscopic Surgery Department No. 1, Andranik Adamyan, and surgeon Tigran Adamyan, a laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy (Warshaw Surgery) was performed.

In cases of pancreatic tumors, the surgery is performed in two main approaches:

  1. Distal pancreatectomy with spleen removal,
  2. Distal pancreatectomy with spleen preservation, which is a more modern approach and known as the Warshaw or Kimura method.

The pancreas and spleen have a complex anatomical position in the abdomen and a shared, abundant blood supply, making the surgical procedure in this area more challenging. To perform laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy, it is necessary to:

  • Master specialized laparoscopic techniques,
  • Have excellent knowledge of the surgical anatomy,
  • Use modern surgical and diagnostic tools, such as CT and MRI.

During this surgery, the body and tail of the pancreas are removed along with the tumor, while preserving the spleen. Nairi Medical Center is fully equipped with all the necessary tools for this intervention.

Advantages of this method:

  • Spleen preservation,
  • Maintenance of immune function,
  • Reduced risk of infectious complications,
  • Fast recovery and positive outcomes.
