Currently, the term “ametropia” refers to all possible refractive errors of the eye (optics), including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and anisometropia. With ametropia, visual acuity is reduced either for near or distant vision, depending on the type of refractive error.

For diagnostic purposes, the following examinations are performed:

  • visual acuity testing (visometry)
  • automated refractometry
  • cycloplegia
  • ophthalmometry
  • pachymetry
  • slit-lamp biomicroscopy
  • retinoscopy (skiascopy)
  • vision testing with a phoropter
  • computer keratotopography
  • ophthalmoscopy
  • keratotopography with specialized equipment for accurate measurement of corneal thickness and curvature
  • A-scan ultrasound (anterior-posterior axis measurement)
  • endothelial cell count and tailored lens selection.

The Ametropia Diagnostic Unit also provides dynamic monitoring of various refractive errors and corneal deformities of different origins (keratoconus, keratoglobus, keratectasia).

Correction of ametropia is performed only after comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, during which the type of refractive error is confirmed. The method of correction is selected individually for each patient, based on the ophthalmologist’s examination and additional tests.
