Orthopedic oncology

Orthopedic oncology
Onco-Orthopedics is a field at the intersection of oncology and orthopedics. It focuses on the treatment of tumors and tumor-like formations of the bones, joints, and soft tissues of the musculoskeletal system.

Treatment of Soft Tissue Tumors

The management of soft tissue tumors is among the most complex challenges in modern oncological surgery. Diagnosis involves the full range of advanced imaging technologies to determine the local spread of the tumor, lymphatic involvement, and distant metastases.

Treatment of Malignant Bone Tumors

The treatment of malignant bone neoplasms represents a relatively new stage in modern oncology. Today, the indications for organ-preserving surgery have significantly expanded, allowing for the removal of nearly any bone or joint defect while maintaining a fully functional limb, even in cases of extensive bone involvement. Amputations and disarticulations are now performed only when radical tumor removal is otherwise impossible.

A significant proportion of patients seeking treatment are children and young adults, reflecting the higher prevalence of these conditions at a younger age.

At the Onco-Orthopedics and Bone Pathology Service of Nairi Medical Center, the full range of surgical procedures for such conditions is performed, including:

  • Organ-preserving surgery for soft tissue tumors of the extremities
  • Extensive and combined interventions for large soft tissue tumors with plastic reconstruction of the resulting defects
  • Intraoperative ultrasound for detection of residual tumor nodules
  • Surgical treatment of benign bone tumors and tumor-like lesions with reconstruction of bone and joint defects using autologous bone grafts or various allografts
  • Function-preserving surgery for osteoid osteoma with preoperative CT-guided localization
  • Resection of malignant bone tumors with reconstruction of defects using custom-made joint and diaphyseal endoprostheses
  • Hip and femoral resections with individual endoprosthetic replacement
  • Resections involving the knee joint and distal femur/proximal tibia with custom knee endoprostheses
  • Resections of the shoulder joint and proximal humerus with individual prosthetic replacement
  • Reconstruction of diaphyseal bone defects with custom endoprostheses

Additional Services

  • The department also performs elective orthopedic procedures, including:
  • Endoprosthetic replacement for coxarthrosis and gonarthrosis
  • Corrective osteotomies for hallux valgus
  • Conservative treatment of osteoporosis
  • Intra-articular hyaluronic acid injections for osteoarthritis (viscosupplementation therapy)
