Proctology

Proctology

Who is a Proctologist and What Does He Treat

A proctologist (or coloproctologist) is a medical specialist who diagnoses, treats, and prevents diseases of the rectum, colon, and anal area.

Proctology combines both therapeutic and surgical approaches to ensure the health of the lower gastrointestinal tract.
The purpose of consulting a proctologist is not only to relieve symptoms but also to prevent complications such as chronic inflammatory or tumor-related conditions.

At Nairi Medical Center, the Proctology Department operates according to international standards, providing early diagnosis and effective treatment.

When to see a proctologist

  • Pain or discomfort in the anal area
  • Blood in the stool
  • Itching, burning, or discharge from the anus
  • Bowel disorders (constipation or diarrhea)
  • Rectal tumors or lumps
  • Unexplained weight loss, anemia, fatigue

These symptoms may indicate inflammatory, neoplastic, or chronic conditions.

Diagnostic procedures

During the initial consultation, the doctor reviews the patient’s history and symptoms, followed by an external examination and, if necessary, a digital rectal exam.

Depending on the case, the following procedures may be performed:

  • Anoscopy – inspection of the anal canal and lower rectum
  • Rectoscopy or sigmoidoscopy – deeper examination
  • Colonoscopy – complete evaluation of the colon
  • Ultrasound or MRI – in complex cases, to assess adjacent organs

Preparation for the visit

To ensure comfort and accuracy during the examination:

  • Eat light food the day before; avoid heavy and gas-forming products
  • Avoid food and liquids for 6–8 hours before the procedure
  • Cleanse the intestines using micro-enemas or special solutions
  • Wear comfortable clothing

The doctor will provide individual preparation instructions depending on the planned examination.

Hemorrhoid treatment

Hemorrhoids are among the most common rectal conditions. They occur when hemorrhoidal veins enlarge, causing pain, burning, and bleeding.

At Nairi Medical Center, hemorrhoid treatment is carried out using modern methods based on disease severity:

  • Conservative and medication-based therapy
  • Minimally invasive techniques:
    • Rubber band ligation
    • Infrared or laser coagulation
    • Sclerotherapy
  • Surgical intervention for advanced cases
