Electroneuromyography

Electroneuromyography (ENMG) is a method examining the full functional work of the nerves, neuromuscular transmissions, and muscles, and it is widely used in medical practice to diagnose various diseases and evaluate the condition of the neuromuscular system. The method helps doctors to accurately diagnose and effectively treat a number of neuromuscular pathologies, by providing them with necessary information about the condition of the peripheral nervous system, neuromuscular transmissions, activity of muscular fibers, and their full functional work.

The principle of the method

ENMG is carried out with 2 methods; the first is the stimulative method, which is based on recording the electrical activity and transmission of the nerves, using electrodes and a stimulator, and the second is the needle method when we evaluate the functional performance of the muscle, or motor unit with special needle electrodes.

The process of examination

Placement of electrodes: Electrodes are placed on the skin in cutaneous electrodes, or in the muscle using fine needle electrodes.

Recording the signals: During ENMG the electrical activity of muscles and nerves is recorded.

Analysis of the result: The received data is analyzed by a doctor, who, evaluating the graphical curves that describe the function of nerves, neuromuscular transmission, and motor units, identifies deviations from the norm.

Diagnosis of neuromuscular diseases: ENMG helps to identify and evaluate pathologies like the following

  • neuropathies/polyneuropathies
  • tunnel syndromes
  • Myasthenia Gravis/Myasthenic syndromes
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Radiculopathies
  • Myopathies
  • Myosites
  • Myotonias
  • Myodystrophies
  • Traumatic injuries of the nerves
  • Inflammatory pathologies of the nerves and a number of other neuromuscular diseases
