Laser-Assisted Urological Surgery

16 Dec 2022

Many of the advanced technologies available in modern medicine have become part of everyday clinical practice at Nairi Medical Center.

Laser technology is particularly important in urology. The use of a urological laser allows many oncological, non-oncological, lithotripsy, and other procedures to be performed more precisely and with less tissue trauma. In many cases, patients recover more quickly and return to their usual daily activities sooner.

One example is the treatment of a patient with two conditions at the same time: a large bladder stone and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Laser technology can be used for both problems. It allows the stone to be fragmented without open surgery and with minimal risk of damage to surrounding structures. In the treatment of BPH, laser surgery can also significantly reduce blood loss.

In appropriate cases, this approach can shorten the postoperative recovery period and hospital stay.

Advantages of laser urological surgery:

  • Faster stone fragmentation without an open incision
  • More precise treatment of soft tissues with reduced blood loss
  • Less postoperative pain and discomfort in many cases
  • Faster recovery and an earlier return to daily activities

Main indications include:

  • Removal and fragmentation of bladder and kidney stones
  • Surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • Certain bladder tumors and strictures
  • Surgery of soft tissues and genital organs
  • Selected kidney procedures, including partial nephrectomy

In some cases, different surgical techniques may be combined. For example, laparoscopic and laser approaches can be used together in the treatment of kidney stones.

The introduction of laser technologies has significantly expanded the possibilities of modern urological surgery, allowing specialists to perform a wide range of procedures with greater precision and less trauma for the patient.
