Unique Surgical Case: Laparoscopic Splenectomy

23 Apr 2021

As a result of a hematological disorder, the patient developed severe enlargement of the spleen.

A laparoscopic splenectomy was performed.

The postoperative period was uneventful, and the patient was discharged from the hospital in stable condition.

What made this case particularly unusual was the size of the removed spleen, which measured approximately 35 cm. According to reports in the international medical literature, laparoscopic removal of a spleen of this size has been described only in a limited number of cases.

Laparoscopic splenectomy itself is considered a technically demanding procedure due to the spleen’s anatomical location, rich blood supply, and fragile tissue structure.

The surgery was performed by the team of the First Department of General and Laparoscopic Surgery under the leadership of Professor Andranik Adamyan.
