Fine-Needle Aspiration Biopsy of the Thyroid (FNAB)

26 May 2022

Why is a thyroid biopsy important?

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid (FNAB) is used to determine the nature of thyroid nodules.

It is the key preoperative method for assessing whether a thyroid nodule is benign or malignant. The procedure is performed using a thin needle under ultrasound guidance.

Cell samples are taken from suspicious nodules and sent for cytological examination. The results help determine the nature of the lesion and guide further treatment planning.
